Topic: Using Chinese Five Elements for Healing.

Owner of Lake Sylvia Wellness and Massage

I am a second-generation healer and somatic bodyworker with over 32 years of experience. I believe healing begins when we feel safe enough to listen deeply to the body and reconnect with its natural wisdom.

In 2025, I opened Lake Sylvia Wellness & Massage in Montesano, located in the historic and famous Vidette building, now home to the Lola Co. plant store. This space reflects my belief that healing is rooted in connection—to ourselves, to one another, and to the natural world.

Somatic bodywork addresses the whole person: the physical body, emotional body, nervous system, energy, history, and spirit. My work draws from therapeutic massage, postural balancing, injury treatment, acupressure, meridian work, Shiatsu, Jin Shin Do, Reiki, and the Chinese Five Element approach to healing. I also incorporate essential oils, sound, visualization, breath, and mindful awareness to support relaxation, regulation, and deeper connection within the body.

I am a Reiki Master, trained in Jin Shin Do Acupressure and Trauma-Informed Healing through Evergreen, and certified in Chinese Five Element work. My approach is informed by the vagus nerve and the body’s capacity to move out of stress and return toward balance.

My upcoming talk will focus on how stress lives in the body and how we can begin to let it go. Together, we will explore ways to calm and support the nervous system, release physical and emotional tension, and align more closely with the rhythms of nature. When the body feels safe, supported, and connected, it can begin to remember how to heal itself.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the body speaks in many ways. Sometimes it speaks through pain or tension. Sometimes through exhaustion, restless sleep, shallow breathing, or the feeling that something is out of balance. My role is not to force the body to change, but to create the conditions where it can soften, release, and reconnect with its own healing intelligence.

My hope is that you leave feeling less burdened by stress, more connected to your body, and a little more like yourself.

mary pat marshall

At 83, Mary Pat Marshall continues to practice energy work, meditation, and gardening. A teacher, healer, energy worker, artist, and medicine woman, she has spent her life bringing together creativity, compassion, intuition, and holistic healing. She now speaks about her life as an artist and healer, reflecting on the experiences, practices, and beliefs that have shaped her journey.

In 1973, Mary Pat studied pendulum polarity therapy under Dr. Lawrence Crusoe. She later became a Reiki Master and massage therapist, helping pioneer massage therapy in Grays Harbor after moving back there in 1985.

Mary Pat was the daughter of Ken and Esther Marshall, the original owners of Marshall’s Garden and Pet. Growing up in a family connected to plants, nature, and nurturing helped shape her lifelong relationship with the natural world. That connection remained central to both her personal life and her healing work.

She founded Soul Picnic Gallery and Massage, a space that brought together bodywork, art, and community. There, she practiced healing, mentored other massage therapists, and encouraged people to explore their own paths toward wellness. Her work has included hot stone therapy, energy work, meditation, plants, and spiritual practice.

With an art degree from the University of Montana, Mary Pat is also a painter and sculptor. Her creative life has always been closely connected to her healing practice, allowing her to explore the relationship between the body, the spirit, the imagination, and the natural world.

Through Patient Gardener, she shared her love of plants, bonsai, and kokedama at the Aberdeen Sunday Market. Gardening continues to be both a creative practice and a form of meditation for her.

Mary Pat’s life reflects a commitment to creativity, nature, personal empowerment, and healing beyond convention. Through her art, teaching, energy work, gardening, and spiritual practice, she continues to inspire others to listen inwardly, remain curious, and find their own ways of becoming whole.
